CHOLERA: AN UNWELCOME GUEST ON ITS WAY OUT

When cholera struck the Americas in 1991 for the first time in the 20th
Century, it killed more than 4,000 people and sickened 400,000 in one
year. This sounded an alarm for urgent control of this pandemic, which
has ravaged humanity for centuries. In response, PAHO diverted human,
technical and financial resources to combat cholera. These efforts
resulted in a steep decline in the epidemic. As of December 2000, the
number of cholera cases and deaths in the Region decreased to 2,703
cases and 40 deaths.
