Candidacy race for Director General of the World Health Organization
underway

The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) has learned of
developments at the World Health Assembly in Geneva regarding the election
of the next Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Earlier this week, Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima, the current Director General,
announced that he would not run for a third term in the 1998 election.
Candidates are coming forward, including:
Dr. George Alleyne of Barbados, the Director of the Pan American Health
Organization (PAHO); Dr. Fernando Antezana of Bolivia, the Deputy Assistant
Director General, WHO; Dr. Gro Harlan Brundtland, the former Prime Minister
of Norway; Dr. Nafis Sadik of Pakistan, the Executive Director of the
United Nations Population Fund (UNFP); and Dr. Uton Muchtar Rafei, the
Regional Director of the South East Asia Regional Office, WHO.
