Presentation: Archives and Finding Missing Children and Unmarked Graves: Supporting Indigenous Community Access to Residential School Records by Madalyn Mandziuk

Madalyn will discuss how access to archival records is essential to the work of finding missing children and unmarked graves from residential schools. She will demonstrate how archival and historical research can support non-invasive archaeological methods such as ground penetrating radar and assists in the process of ground searches that use these methods of geophysical archaeology. Madalyn will elaborate on types of archival records and the information they offer to understand what happened to the children that never made it home. Further, Madalyn will offer some recommendations on how archival institutions and archivists can support Indigenous community access to records. There will be a long question period and all questions (including those specific to the archive or museum in which you work) are encouraged and welcomed.

Content Warning. Please be aware that the presentation deals with the sensitive subject of helping people attempting to find missing and murdered children. If you need support, you’re encouraged to contact survivor’s crisis line number 1-800-721-0066.

Madalyn Mandziuk holds a B.A. Hons. in History from the University of Alberta and is currently a JD Candidate in the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. Madalyn works as a research assistant and is the historical and archival research lead at the Institute of Prairie and Indigenous Archaeology, an Indigenous-led research institute at the University of Alberta that has been supporting Indigenous communities in the work to find missing children and unmarked graves at residential schools using non-invasive archaeological methods such as ground-penetrating radar. Madalyn's work over the last year has consisted of developing pathways to connect archival and historical records with ground-penetrating radar findings, supporting Indigenous communities to access archival records related to or from the residential school system, and developing resources for Indigenous communities for the archival research component of this work. Madalyn has been working to advocate for Indigenous community voices in archival spaces and for increased accessibility, trauma-informed practice, and decolonization in archival institutions. Madalyn has a background in front-line social work and is an avid volunteer in the community.
