The Tom and Christine Symons Archival Fellowship was established in 2018 to honour the many facets of Professor Tom Symons’ work and legacy. It supports archival research using the T.H.B. Symons and related fonds located in the Trent University Library and Archives, Peterborough, Canada.
The Deadline for the 2023 fellowship is December 15, 2022. More information on the fellowship and application procedures are below and also available on the Archives’ website<https://www.trentu.ca/library/symons-archival-fellowship>.
This fellowship of up to $1000, administered by the Symons Archival Fellowship Committee, assists both graduate students and established researchers who need to travel to, and establish temporary residence in Peterborough. Intended to assist with travel, living and research expenses, the fellowship is available to scholars interested in any aspect of Tom Symons’ work although priority will be given to applicants whose proposal indicates how it will contribute to articles, monographs or other writing projects.
Applicants must submit a brief (2-3 pages) description of their project and a short curriculum vitae of no more than 20 pages. If the applicant is a graduate student, a letter from their supervisor or a thesis committee member is required. The proposal should include a description of how the applicant intends to use the archival materials, why the Symons papers are important to the project, how the funds will be used, as well as any other sources of funding the applicant has for this project.
Awards are made to individuals or a group of scholars, but not to institutions. Successful applicants should not be associated with Trent University or live in the Peterborough region although someone with an honorary affiliation to Trent may be considered if they do not live near to Trent University.
Recipients are required to commence their research at Trent University Library and Archives within 18 months of receiving the fellowship and are normally expected to be in residence near or at Trent while doing the research. They may be asked to participate in campus activities where appropriate, such as giving a public talk about their research. Recipients will submit a short report on the outcome of their research within two years of the award. The award can only be held once.
The Committee will receive applications until Dec. 15, 2022, and a recipient selected and announced by March 1, 2023.

La Tom and Christine Symons Archival Fellowship (bourse d'archivage Tom et Christine Symons) a été créée en 2018 pour rendre hommage aux nombreuses facettes du travail et du legs du professeur Tom Symons. Elle soutient la recherche archivistique grâce au fonds T.H.B. Symons et aux fonds connexes situés à la bibliothèque et aux archives de l'Université Trent, à Peterborough, Canada.
Cette bourse d'un montant maximal de 1 000 dollars, administrée par le Symons Archival Fellowship Committee (comité de la bourse d'archivage Symons), aide les étudiants diplômés et les chercheurs établis qui doivent se rendre à Peterborough et y résider de façon temporaire. Destinée à couvrir les frais de déplacement, de subsistance et de recherche, la bourse est offerte aux chercheurs qui s'intéressent à tout aspect de l'œuvre de Tom Symons, même si la priorité sera accordée aux candidats dont la proposition explique comment elle contribuera à la rédaction d'articles, de monographies ou d'autres projets d'écriture.
Les candidats doivent soumettre une courte description (2-3 pages) de leur projet et un bref curriculum vitae de 20 pages maximum. Si le candidat est un étudiant diplômé, une lettre de son superviseur ou d'un membre du comité de thèse est exigée. La proposition doit comprendre une description de la manière dont le candidat compte utiliser les documents d'archives, la raison pour laquelle les documents Symons sont importants pour le projet, la manière dont les fonds seront utilisés, ainsi que toute autre source de financement dont dispose le candidat pour ce projet.
Les bourses seront attribuées à des particuliers ou à un groupe de chercheurs, mais pas à des institutions. Les candidats retenus ne doivent pas être associés à l'Université Trent ni vivre dans la région de Peterborough, bien qu'une personne ayant une affiliation honoraire à Trent puisse être prise en considération si elle ne vit pas à proximité de l'Université Trent.
Les récipiendaires sont tenus de commencer leurs recherches à la bibliothèque et aux archives de l'Université Trent dans les 18 mois suivant l'obtention de la bourse et doivent normalement résider près de l'Université ou à l'Université Trent pendant la durée de leurs recherches. On pourra leur demander de participer à des activités sur le campus, le cas échéant, par exemple en donnant une conférence publique sur leurs travaux de recherche. Les récipiendaires devront soumettre un court rapport sur les résultats de leurs recherches dans les deux ans suivant l'attribution de la bourse. Le prix ne peut être décerné qu'une seule fois.
Le comité recevra les candidatures jusqu'au 15er décembre 2022. Le nom de la personne sélectionnée sera annoncé d’ici au 1er mars 2023.
