As Third World Health Aid, a member of PHM, we developed a video that
analyses in simple terms the impact of free trade agreements on the
social determinants of health.
We thought these videos might be interesting to share amongst the
broader PHM-network, so maybe it could be useful to include in the
PHM-exchange?
The video exists in French and English.
It is developed in collaboration with two Belgian networks that work on
the right to health. Members of these platforms include trade unions,
academics, ngo's and other health organisations.
Although the focus is on European policy, it makes broader claims on the
nature of free trade agreements and their impact on developing countries.

As the biggest trade area in the world, the European Union has a strong
interest in the markets of developing countries. They announce that free
trade agreements are win-win situations for both parties, but is this
assumption correct?
Who benefits from free trade agreements?
Free trade agreements lead to increased commercialization of all parts
of the economy. Private companies within public decision-making. The
interests of companies are opposed to the interests of the general
public. Companies want to make a profit. The public wants products and
services that are accessible, whether you are poor or not. Health, labor
and environmental rules are being eroded by the principle of free trade. .
Free trade is put forward as a precondition for economic development,
necessary for creating welfare and health. But commercial health care
creates different levels of access to health care, driving inequality.
Market logics trumps the public good.
Currently in the news
The debate about free trade is in the news since agreements such as the
TTIP come under more and more scrutiny for the broad societal movement.
The work group North-South of the Action platform health and solidarity
and the work group Social determinants of health of Be-cause health are
launching this film to influence the public and politicians about the
negative impact of free trade agreements. TWHA is a member of both
Belgian platforms. We ask that the European Union stops supporting the
privatization and commercialization of health care.

En tant que plus gros bloc commercial au monde, l'Union européenne porte
un vif intérêt aux marchés des pays en développement. On prétend que les
accords de libre-échange sont du win-win: bons pour tout le monde. Mais
est-ce bien vrai?
Libre-échange: dans l'intérêt de qui?
Les accords de libre-échange mènent à une commercialisation constante de
tous les secteurs de l'économie. Dès lors, les entreprises privées
occupent toujours plus d'espace au sein du processus décisionnel public.
Or, les intérêts des entreprises et ceux de la population sont tout à
fait contradictoires. Les entreprises sont là pour faire toujours plus
de profit. L'intérêt public, en revanche, exige que les produits et
services soient accessibles, peu importe votre situation financière. Les
normes sanitaires, professionnelles et environnementales sont ainsi
mises sous pression.
Le libre-échange est vanté comme condition préalable au développement
économique; soi-disant "nécessaire" pour engendrer la prospérité et la
santé. Cependant, les soins de santé commercialisés créent des
inégalités dans l'accès aux soins de santé et accroissent les inégalités
en général. La logique du marché prévaut sur l'intérêt public.
Actualité brûlante
Le débat autour du libre-échange est une question d'actualité brûlante à
présent que des traités tels que le TTIP sont de plus en plus critiqués
par un large mouvement social en pleine croissance. Le groupe de travail
Nord-Sud de la Plateforme d'action Santé et Solidarité et le groupe de
travail Déterminants sociaux de la Santé de Be-cause Health lancent ce
petit film pour sensibiliser le grand public et les politiques à
l'impact négatif des accords de libre-échange. M3M est membre de ces
deux plateformes belges. Nous demandons que l'Union européenne cesse de
soutenir les projets de privatisation et la commercialisation du secteur
des soins de santé.
