The Canada-ASEAN Centre in Singapore and its partner, the
Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada have been mandated to
serve as catalysts linking Canada with a wide range of
interest groups in ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations). These include the strengthening of academic links
to increase knowledge and understanding by Canadians of the
ASEAN region (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,
Singapore and Thailand) and its neighbour states of Vietnam,
Cambodia, and Laos.
Travel grant awardees will be part of our efforts to promote
understanding and broader awareness. T o that end we will
appreciate any efforts that awardees and their host
organization(s) can undertake which will draw wide attention
to their activities.
Travel grants of $Can5,000 will be awarded to 20 Canadian
scholars to fund the cost of their travel t the region in
order to:
pursue study-related field research focused on the
Southeast Asian region
strengthen the capability and competitiveness of
Canadian graduate students by increasing their
knowledge and understanding of the region
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants,
already holding an undergraduate degree, and registered as
full-time graduate students at an accredited post-secondary
educational institution in Canada.
Specifically,
applicants registered as full-time Masters or Doctoral
candidates, whose focus of research is SOUTHEAST ASIA in
areas such as politics, history, environment, science &
technology, gender, economics, legal studies, culture,
language, geography and religion, [health] etc.
-OR-
applicants registered as full-time graduate students in
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PROGRAMS at universities or enroled
in programs of further study in international business in
COMMUNITY COLLEGES.
ELIGIBLE ACTIVITIES
The grants are provided to help students pursue applied
field research integral to their formal program of study.
Applicants are encouraged to submit applications for visits
of a minimum of eight weeks duration.
Travel grants must be used by March 31, 1966.
This program DOES NOT cover cooperative work placements.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Preference will be given to:
Applicants whose supportive referrals from the Canadian
academic advisor best attest to the suitability of the
assignment and of the applicant for a future
academic/business career in the study area.
Applicants whose proposed research reflects highest academic
merit, and relevance to their future career plans.
Applicants who are not holding another grant award or
similar funding in the same time frame.
applicants who have an ACKNOWLEDGED SPONSORING INSTITUTION
in Southeast Asia.
SELECTION OF AWARDS
Twenty individuals will be awarded travel grants in a
competitive process, selected by the Canadian Academic
Advisory Committee of the Canada-ASEAN Centre. Adequate
representation across Canada and a gender balance of
recipients will be sought. Winners will be notified in March
of 1995.
Successful applicants will be expected to make their own
travel and work arrangements.
WHAT IS NEEDED TO APPLY?
Applications should be a maximum of three double-spaced
typed pages AND MUST PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IN
THE FORMAT AND ORDER LISTED BELOW:
PAGE ONE should list:
> the applicant's name, position and full mailing address
> name and full address of faculty advisor
> concise statement of research to be undertaken
PAGE TWO should outline the research plan which consists of:
> objectives
> methodology
> rationale
> overall significance of the research
PAGE THREE should describe:
> relevance of applicant's proposed activity to the
objectives of the Travel Grant Fund
> applicant's interest in Southeast Asia and how this
grant would contribute to the applicant's future
involvement in the region
> the host institution in the ASEAN region
APPLICANTS SHOULD TAKE CARE TO INSURE THAT THEIR APPLICATION
PRECISELY REFLECTS THE FORMAT DESCRIBED ABOVE. THOSE WHO
FAIL TO ADHERE TO THE ABOVE FORMAT RISK DISQUALIFICATION
FROM THE COMPETITION.
ATTACHMENTS TO APPLICATION
Please note that these attachments MUST be submitted with
applications.
A. Letter of referral from academic advisor. This letter
should include a supportive referral attesting to the
appropriateness of the activity and the applicant for a
future academic/business career in the region.
B. Transcripts showing full-time status of student and
academic record.
C. Brief CV
