Position: Executive Director
Organization: Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions
Network (TEPHINET)
Location: Atlanta, Georgia, United States
Salary: $65,000 to $75,000 (depending on qualifications)

Education and skills:

Advanced degree plus 5 to 7 years experience, or bachelor's degree plus 7 to 10
years of experience in business or health administration, community health,
public health, public relations or a related field

   Demonstrated strong team building and networking skills
   Demonstrated strong management, fund-raising and financial reporting
   abilities
   Excellent interpersonal skills
   Excellent oral and written communication abilities in English
   International experience, especially with developing countries
   Public health experience
   Knowledge of applied epidemiology and applied epidemiology training programs
   (FETPs and PHSWOWs) desirable
   Computer skills

Languages: Fluency in English, knowledge of another language desirable


About the organization:

The TEPHINET Mission: Strengthen international public health capacity through
initiating, supporting, and networking of field-based public health training
programs that enhance competencies in applied epidemiology and public health
interventions.

The Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network
(TEPHINET) is a non-profit organization, which was founded in 1997. It supports
training programs in applied epidemiology worldwide. These training programs are
designed to train epidemiologists in disease prevention and control and
epidemiological services to strengthen public health capacity. TEPHINET
collaborates with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) and other organizations.

TEPHINET strives to achieve the following goals:

   Support and strengthen existing field-based public health training programs
   Link public health professionals to organizations responding to public health
   situations that require competencies in field epidemiology
   Support the development of field-based public health training programs in
   countries with needs
   Enhance applied research activities of member training institutions in
   response to public health problems and threats

The TEPHINET staff is comprised of the executive director and program manager.

As with most non-profit organizations, TEPHINET has a board of directors. It is
composed of a representative from each of the six regions (Americas, Eastern
Mediterranean, Europe, South-East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Western
Pacific). A representative is elected by program directors from each region and
serves a three-year term. The chair of the board of directors is elected by the
program directors and serves a two-year term. The board of directors meets twice
a year to identify policies and outcomes to be delivered by the executive
director and oversees activities of and outcomes produced by the executive
director.


Responsibilities of the executive director:

   Make policy recommendations to the board of directors, keep the board
   informed on matters of significance through reports and briefs, and implement
   their decisions
   Plan agenda and prepare the minutes for meetings of the board of directors
   and general membership, and follow up as required
   Develop and coordinate a strategic plan with the board for TEPHINET
   Produce outcomes specified in the current work plan approved by the board
   Solicit funds and write proposals to secure funding to support network
   activities as specified in the work plan and ensure goals and objectives are
   met
   Seek opportunities and resources to help support training programs
   Manage the financial affairs of the organization, including budget planning
   and monitoring and advising the board of directors on revenues and
   expenditures
   Promote and maintain effective communication and good relations within the
   organization and with partners and other organizations
   Ensure that the organization complies with the requirements to maintain
   non-profit and private volunteer organization status
   Provide bi-annual reports to the board of directors
   Direct and supervise the TEPHINET office
   Maintain adequate records
   Develop the capacity of the organization
   Represent the organization to donors and other organizations and at meetings

This is a one-year position that may be renewed annually upon approval of the
board of directors. We are seeking an individual for a longer term commitment.

Limited international travel may be necessary.

Position will be open late summer or early fall.
