PAHO CENTENNIAL CONTEST WINNERS

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has announced that a 10-year
old Jamaican girl and a 17-year-old Peruvian boy are the winners of PAHO
Centennial contests for best poster and essay, respectively. The prizes
for each winner are $500 cash from PAHO, a computer from Discovery
Health and a certificate signed by Dr. George Alleyne, Director of PAHO.
Winners were announced at a meeting of PAHO's Executive Committee, which
the Ministers of Health from both winning countries are attending. The
Pan American Centennial Poster Contest was won by Reeshemah Ball, age
10, from St. Catherine, Jamaica. Her poster, entitled Healthy Living,
shows an apple with images of people engaging in healthy behaviors. The
Pan American Centennial Essay Contest was won by Róger Flores López, age
17, of Comas, Peru for his essay entitled Unidos por la Salud (United
for Health). His essay tells a story of a humble shoemaker in a
shantytown who unites his community to build a health post and water and
sewer lines, using the ancient Inca concept of "minca," in which groups
of villagers work together for a collective goal. Canada's winner was
Kirsten Stackhouse, age 8, from Colpitts Settlement, New Brunswick. Her
complex poster, showing an unhealthy and healthy world, is displayed
online in the PAHO gallery at:

REPORT ON GENDER VIOLENCE

The final report from the June 2001 Inter-Agency Symposium on
Gender-Based Violence, Health and Rights in the Americas, which PAHO
co-sponsored, has just been published. The report covers policies and
programs related to gender violence and also makes a number of
recommendations for dealing with this difficult issue. The inclusion of
gender violence in international conventions and in public policies in
the Americas has contributed to the creation of new modalities of
intervention in health, social policies, and in the promotion of human
rights. The nature and specificity of gender violence as well as the
contextual factors that influence sectoral interventions have challenged
the health sector, forcing an improvement in the effectiveness of its
actions.

PAHO SUPPORTS APPLICATIONS TO THE GLOBAL FUND TO FIGHT AIDS,
TUBERCULOSIS AND MALARIA

PAHO has joined with several other institutions to collect and share
documents and other background information, in English and Spanish, that
will help programs to submit successful applications to the Global Fund
to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Fund is an independent
public-private partnership working to increase funding to fight these
three diseases in countries with the greatest need and contribute to
poverty reduction as part of the Millennium Development Goals. The Fund
will support efforts in prevention, treatment, care and support of the
infected and directly affected that complement existing programs and/or
activities. For more information, visit:

INTERNATIONAL POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH TRAINING FELLOWSHIPS OFFERED

PAHO and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) are inviting
researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean to apply to spend a
year in the United States doing postdoctoral training in the intramural
laboratories of the NIH. The deadline for applications is 31 July 2002.
The initiative is aimed at training researchers by offering the
