Global Health: A Humanitarian Crisis? 

When and Where: The conference is being held from Sunday, October 31 to Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Ottawa Hotel, 101 Lyon St. N., Ottawa, ON, Canada. 

Call for Abstracts: The deadline for abstract submissions is Monday, March 29th, 2010.  We encourage all those who would like to present a paper or poster to submit their abstract before the deadline as late submissions will not be accepted. Abstracts can be submitted in English or French. Abstract information and submission forms can be found on our website at http://www.csih.org/en/conference/abstracts.asp  

Conference Overview: The 2010 Canadian Conference on Global Health will provide the venue and the opportunity for the global health community to come together with other sectors which also may have an impact on global health. This conference will provide the opportunity for the critical interface with other emerging crises and the need to ensure that health is placed front and centre as a priority issue that needs to be addressed. The following issues will be discussed: the economic crisis, the movement of people (forced migration and refugees), armed combat, climate change, pandemics and transparency and governance. These issues will be highlighted in terms of their relationship to the global health crises and the need to integrate health into these various sector responses. Sunday, October 31 
Pathways to Global Health Competence 
. Global health competence for practitioners, researchers, and community development and government decision makers will be further strengthened through workshops and consultations at this forum that will improve our collective ability to address the crisis. 

Monday, November 1 
Defining the Crisis: Global Health, Equity and Humanitarian Crises 
. The state of global health, the inequities in global health and the determinants of health will be highlighted as one of the key subthemes of this conference. Humanitarian responses will also be highlighted as well as global and regional approaches, processes challenges and solutions will be presented and discussed. 
The Crises and Responses 
. The scope of natural disasters climate change and political/social conflicts and the inequitable impact on global health will be a critical subtheme. Humanitarian responses will also be highlighted as well as global and regional approaches, processes challenges and solutions. 

Tuesday, November 2 
Evidence/Research and Interventions 
. Evidence/research and interventions will be a third subtheme. What is the evidence, what is working what is not working and why. What are the challenges, (financing, implementation and dissemination)? 
. What are the new innovations and what have we been doing that works and what do we know that works but is not getting the support it needs? 
. Where are the research gaps? Who is funding and what are the partnerships that need to be in place to ensure sustained funding and support to establish the best evidence? 

Wednesday, November 3 
Challenges and Solutions 
Putting the Human into Humanitarian Responses 
. What about the response? How well are humanitarian responses responding, what are the challenges. What about more sustainable solutions to the global health crises? 
. What have we learned from humanitarian responses and how can the response be sustained and more effective after the emergency phase? Are there success stories in terms of health systems strengthening which we should be celebrating? Why are the success stories not being rolled out? 
. How are we coordinating with other sectors to build and strengthen responses that will improve global health inequities?

L'appel d'abrégés : La date limite de réception des propositions est le lundi 29 mars 2010.  Nous encourageons tous ceux qui souhaitent présenter une communication ou une présentation visuelle à soumettre leur abrégé le plus tôt possible. Des soumissions en retard ne seront pas acceptées. Les abrégés peuvent être soumis en anglais ou en français. Points saillants de la conference : La Conférence canadienne sur la santé mondiale 2010 fournira à la communauté de la santé mondiale un point de rencontre avec d'autres secteurs qui peuvent aussi avoir une incidence sur la santé mondiale. Elle se veut aussi une opportunité de créer une fenêtre essentielle sur d'autres crises émergentes et sur la nécessité de veiller à ce que la santé soit une priorité incontournable. Les questions suivantes seront abordées : la crise économique, les déplacements de population (migration forcée et réfugiés), les conflits armés, le changement climatique, les épidémies et la transparence et la gouvernance. Ces questions seront mises en évidence quant à leur lien avec les crises sanitaires mondiales et la nécessité d'intégrer la santé dans les diverses interventions sectorielles.

Dimanche 31 octobre 
Les voies de la compétence en santé internationale 
. La compétence en santé mondiale pour les praticiens, chercheurs et décideurs gouvernementaux et en développement communautaire sera renforcée au moyen d'ateliers et de consultations à l'occasion de ce forum qui améliorera notre capacité collective de réagir à la crise. 

Lundi 1er novembre 
Définir la crise : Crises en santé mondiale, crises d'équité et crises humanitaires 
. L'état de la santé mondiale, les inégalités en santé mondiale et les déterminants de la santé seront mis en évidence comme l'un des sous-thèmes clés de la conférence. Les interventions humanitaires seront aussi mises en lumière, de même que des modèles, processus, défis et solutions mondiaux et régionaux. 
Crises et interventions 
. L'étendue des catastrophes naturelles, du changement climatique et des conflits politiques et sociaux, et leur incidence inévitable sur la santé mondiale, seront un sous-thème essentiel. Les interventions humanitaires seront aussi mises en lumière, de même que des modèles, processus, défis et solutions mondiaux et régionaux. 

Mardi 2 novembre 
Faits, recherche et interventions 
. Les faits, la recherche et les interventions constitueront un troisième sous-thème. Qu'est-ce qui détermine un fait, qu'est-ce qui fonctionne, qu'est-ce qui ne fonctionne pas et pourquoi. Quels sont les défis (financement, mise en ouvre et diffusion)? 
. Quelles sont les plus récentes innovations et lesquelles de nos interventions ont connu du succès? Lesquelles de nos interventions ont eu du succès mais ne reçoivent pas le soutien nécessaire? 
. Quels sont les lacunes quant à la recherche? Qui assure le financement et quels partenariats doivent être établis pour assurer la pérennité du financement et du soutien en vue d'établir des faits solides? 

Mercredi 3 novembre 
Défis et solutions 
Placer l'humain au cour des interventions humanitaires 
. Qu'en est-il des interventions? Quels sont les succès des interventions humanitaires, et quelles sont les difficultés? Faut-il des solutions plus durables aux crises en santé mondiale? 
. Qu'avons-nous appris des interventions humanitaires et comment les interventions peuvent-elles être maintenues et gagner en efficacité une fois la première urgence passée? Y a-t-il eu des réussites en matière de renforcement des systèmes de santé qui méritent d'être soulignées? Pourquoi les initiatives qui fonctionnent ne sont-elles pas reconduites? 
. Quels efforts de coordination déployons-nous avec d'autres secteurs afin d'établir et de renforcer des interventions qui réduiront les inégalités en santé mondiale?
