PAHO WILL HELP COUNTRIES IMPLEMENT HIV PROJECTS FINANCED BY GLOBAL FUND

PAHO has pledged to assist member countries in setting up programs
financed by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The
Global Fund is an independent, public-private partnership designed to
attract, manage and disburse new resources to fight the global crises of
AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The Fund's objectives are to finance
effective programs, balancing the needs for prevention, treatment, care
and support, in order to alleviate suffering, save lives, and help end
these diseases. As of April 2003, US$3.36 billion was committed to the
Fund from industrialized and developing country governments,
corporations, foundations and individuals. For more information, visit:

PAHO DIRECTOR: COOPERATION LIKELY TO INCREASE AS RESULT OF SARS

"The impact of the Asian pneumonia epidemic has shown how interdependent
countries are in a globalized world," said PAHO Director Dr. Mirta
Roses. So far, 5,462 cases of SARS including 353 deaths have been
reported from 29 countries. She went on to say that the outbreaks "will
help in the recognition of the importance that organizations such as
PAHO have in creating a neutral space where countries can debate and
reach agreements." According to Roses, PAHO’s role is likely to continue
to increase, as health issues are essential to sustainable development.
To face the new challenges, she said, the organization is beginning its
second century with important changes in its strategy and structure. For

FIRST VACCINATION WEEK IN THE AMERICAS STARTS JUNE 2

Health officials are readying vaccines, looking for pockets of
unvaccinated children, and arranging logistics in preparation for the
first ever Vaccination Week in the Americas taking place on the first
week of June. All countries in South America, plus Mexico, Guatemala,
Honduras, Costa Rica, and Bahamas are set to participate in the
unprecedented event, which aims to reach children who have not been
vaccinated in indigenous communities, marginal urban areas, remote areas
and frontier zones. For more information, visit:

FLOODS IN SANTA FE, ARGENTINA

The Salado River has risen to 19 feet (5.7 meters), more than six feet
(2 meters) above normal, and with rains forecast to continue until the
weekend, officials expect the water to continue rising. Authorities
evacuated a children's hospital and health officials reported that many
highways are inaccessible. Argentinean Minister of Health Ginés González
García visited the affected area and expressed concern over a rise in
Hepatitis A and other sanitary health epidemic risks. An effort to
vaccinate residents and purify the contaminated water is underway. The
Ministry of Health has delivered equipment to purify contaminated water
sufficient for 50,000 people a day. For the full press release, visit:
