PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN

The Canadian Government has announced that it is contributing $66
million in Canadian dollars to UNICEF in support of vital immunization
and vitamin A distribution programs for children in the poorest
countries. The gift to UNICEF comes as part of a package of global
health initiatives by the Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA) totaling $143.6 million over five years. UNICEF will receive
$32.3 million from CIDA over five years to help expand routine
vaccination of children against such diseases as tuberculosis, measles,
diphtheria and tetanus. UNICEF will also receive $33.6 million to extend
its highly successful vitamin A supplementation campaign, which
presently reaches more than 200 million children in over 70 countries.

HEALTH CANADA DOMESTIC TRAVEL HEALTH ADVICE: SARS IN TORONTO

Health Canada does not normally issue travel advice with respect to
domestic travel. However, given the nature of the Canadian SARS (severe
acute respiratory syndrome) situation and to give Canadians the best
available advice, Health Canada is providing this domestic travel
notice. Health Canada seeks to remind Canadian travellers that the risk
of acquiring SARS from travel to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) remains
low. At this time, the only risk factors identified with SARS cases in
Canada are recent travel to affected countries in Asia, or close contact
with a person who has SARS. Close contact includes living in the same
household, providing health care to someone with SARS, or having direct
contact with respiratory secretions of a person with SARS. Health
Canada continues to strongly endorse travel into and throughout the GTA
as safe and encourages travellers to maintain their business and/or
personal travel plans to the GTA. For the full notice, visit:

JOB OPPORTUNITY: CPHA, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

For over 90 years, the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) has
worked to improve the health of Canadians. Today, CPHA is recognized as
a national and international leader in the development of public health
policy and practice. To continue along its leadership path, CPHA with
its 25-member board requires the guidance and direction of a skilled
association manager and visionary as its new CEO. The incumbent will
inherit a dedicated and highly skilled full-time staff of 89, of whom 62
are located at the CPHA National Office in Canada and 27 are located
overseas. The CEO will also manage an operating and program/project
budget in excess of $11 million, report to a nine-member Executive Board
on operational matters, and, together with staff, manage much of CPHA’s
day-to-day business. With a broad mandate to manage a host of programs
and projects, and a range of products and services, CPHA requires a
constant flow of funds to sustain its success and deliver its many
activities. The incoming CEO will therefore display exemplary financial
leadership and stewardship. For more information, visit:
