WORLD HEALTH DAY 2003: HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS FOR CHILDREN

"Every child deserves the right to health, and no child should face
threats to health from unsafe environments at home, in school or in the
community," said PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses Periago. This year's
theme for World Health Day is "Shape the Future of Life: Healthy
Environments for Children." The aim is to solve an especially critical
problem: the need to create safe, healthy environments that allow
children to grow into healthy adults. PAHO has designated the week of
April 7 to April 14 as "Health in the Americas Week," focusing on the
environment and children. Starting on World Health Day April 7, a series
of events will be held in Washington and in member countries,
culminating on the Day of the Americas April 14. For more information,

travelled last weekend to El Salvador to participate in the inauguration
of the new Centre for Research and Development in Health at the
University of El Salvador. The centre, which grew out of an agreement
between the university and the government of Spain, will conduct studies
in the areas of biomedicine, clinical medicine and public health. For

GLOBALIZATION IN HEALTH DOCUMENT

The document "Globalization in Health," which will be an agenda item for
37th Session of the Subcommittee on Planning and Programming of the
Executive Committee in late March, is now available on the PAHO website.
The document examines the impact of globalization in the region and the
opportunities that it represents, with a view to improving the health of
the peoples of the Americas, increasing effectiveness and equity in
national health systems, and reducing inequalities in access to health
services. The document is available in PDF format at:
http://www.paho.org/English/GOV/CE/SPP/spp37-05-e.pdf.

FAMILY AND HEALTH DOCUMENT

The document "Family and Health," which will be an agenda item for 37th
Session of the Subcommittee on Planning and Programming of the Executive
Committee in late March, is now available on the PAHO website. The
paper illustrates how the role of family in health and illness has
gained recognition over the past three decades. The family is the
setting where health behaviour and health decisions are first
established, and where culture, values, and the norms of the society
begin.  Complex internal and external variables influence the family;
however, these complex interrelationships between family and health are
poorly documented. To document is available in PDF format at:
http://www.paho.org/English/GOV/CE/SPP/spp37-06-e.pdf.

NEW WHO NUTRITION MANUAL FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS

A new manual published jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the
relationship between infection and nutrition and offers simple dietary
suggestions for the estimated 42 million people living with HIV/AIDS.
By bolstering the immune system and boosting energy levels, balanced
nutrition can help the body fight back against the ravages of the
disease; by helping to maintain body weight, it can also support drug
treatments and prevent malnutrition. For the press release, visit:
