The Group for Action Research of the McGill AIDS Centre takes great pleasure
in announcing the first seminar in its series on HIV and Development.
Dr. Josef Decosas will be presenting the series opener entitled:
HIV and Development
on Tuesday, June 18 at 12 noon in room 24,
Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McGill University,
1020 Pine Avenue West (corner of Pine and Peel), Montreal.
What are the developmental characterisics that determine the epidemic spread
and the level of endemicity of HIV? What has been the role and the impact of
the activities known as 'international developmental' in shaping the
pandemic? What do we know about the way HIV will influence the process of
social development in those societies most affected by the pandemic? Working
in the paradigm of critical social and historic analysis, the presentation
will explore the basis and the validity of causal theories linking the HIV
pandemic to the process of social development.
Members of the Group for Action Research of the McGill AIDS Centre are drawn
from public health, university, and community milieux and are primarily
interested in the links between HIV and development. In addition to
supporting strategies which encourage good governance, community ownership
and action, and the strengthening of local health structures, the group
advocates for participatory action research approaches which are
complementary to traditional quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
