UNICEF CALLS GLOBAL RESPONSE TO CHILDREN ORPHANED BY AIDS GROSSLY
INADEQUATE

Leading up to World AIDS Day on December 1, UNICEF executive director
Carol Bellamy said the global response to the crisis of children
orphaned by AIDS is grossly inadequate. Without a greater sense of
urgency and collective action, millions more children will put
themselves at enormous risk in their struggle to stay alive. Bellamy
pointed out that "Almost without exception, children orphaned by AIDS
are marginalized, stigmatized, malnourished, uneducated, and
psychologically damaged. They are affected by actions over which they
have no control and in which they had no part. They deal with the most
trauma, face the most dangerous threats and have the least protections.
And because of all this, they too are very likely to become
HIV-positive." For the full press release, visit:

UN REPORT: ENSURING REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS WOULD HELP FIGHT
POVERTY

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched its 2002 Annual
Report: "People, Poverty and Possibilities: Making Development Work for
the Poor." According to the report, promoting reproductive health and
rights is indispensable for economic growth and poverty reduction.
Developing countries that have invested in education and health,
including family planning, have achieved smaller families and slower
population growth, and as a result, higher productivity, more savings
and more productive investment. On the other hand, the report also shows
that inadequate efforts to provide reproductive health services and
combat gender inequality result in continued high fertility among the
poor, perpetuating poverty and inequality within both households and
nations. The report is available at:
http://www.unfpa.org/swp/2002/english/ch1/index.htm.

GLOBAL EMERGENCY OUTBREAK RESPONSE FUND ESTABLISHED

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nuclear Threat Initiative
(NTI) have established a Global Emergency Outbreak Response Fund to
strengthen the global response to infectious disease outbreaks, whether
naturally occurring or from the release of biological weapons. The
WHO-NTI Emergency Outbreak Response Fund will ensure that response teams
can be on the ground within 24 hours of a detected outbreak – wherever
it occurs around the globe. The $500,000 fund removes immediate
financial barriers to an urgent response and will allow WHO to mobilize
immediately. For the full press release, visit:
