CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: 2003 FRED L. SOPER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH

Excellent medical and public health research and writing is one of the
most important means of promoting health. Current information on health
situations, trends, diseases, treatment and delivery systems is critical
for use in planning, executing, and evaluating public health policies
and programs. PAHO recognizes significant contributions to health
literature in the Americas through the Fred L. Soper Award. This award
promotes the highest standards of research and emphasizes regional
impact. The deadline for submission of nominations is June 30, 2003.

INTERNATIONAL NETWORK TO PROMOTE WATER AND HEALTH AS HUMAN RIGHTS

PAHO has launched the International Network to Promote Safe Household
Water Treatment and Storage, a global coalition uniting academia,
private enterprise, international organizations and other groups working
in health, water and technology. The goal is to apply new
household-level methods to rapidly increase access to water and
sanitation for the 1.1 billion people worldwide who currently lack such
services. Every year there are 1.7 million deaths related to unsafe
water, sanitation and hygiene, mainly from infectious diarrhea. For more

FIRST VACCINATION WEEK IN THE AMERICAS A SUCCESS

As part of the first Vaccination Week in the Americas, ministers of
health and first ladies joined health workers and community leaders at
10 border areas across the region to vaccinate hard-to-reach children.
Their efforts demonstrate that cooperation between bordering countries
is essential for promoting health equity in the Americas. The goal of
the Vaccination Week is to reach those children who have never been
vaccinated or who have not completed their series of vaccines. The
campaign sought to vaccinate some 16 million children against major
diseases, plus 2.7 million women of childbearing age against tetanus. In
some areas campaign workers went from house to house, and in remote
areas they travelled by boat. Others worked from temporary health posts
to reach marginal urban populations. For the full article, visit:

THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TOBACCO GROWERS ATTACKS WHO

The International Association of Tobacco Growers (IATG) has publicly
blamed WHO's tobacco control policies for a decline in the amount of
land where tobacco is grown in the Americas and for the fact that many
farmers have lost their livelihoods. PAHO notes that, contrary to these
allegations, the surface of land where tobacco is grown and the
production of tobacco have increased between 1990 and 2000. According to
internal documents belonging to the tobacco industry, the IATG is a
public relations agency that was created by the industry as its
spokesperson in developing countries in an effort to curb tobacco
control initiatives. For the full article, visit:
