PAHO PROMOTES DISASTER PREVENTION STRATEGIES

For six months out of every year, the threat of devastation from
hurricanes and tropical storms hangs over the Caribbean, Central America
and the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States. Although they can
wreak havoc on human settlements and the natural environment, these
weather phenomena need not cause full-fledged disasters each time they
strike. PAHO has developed tools that can help countries mitigate such
natural disasters. For more information, visit:

MODELS

The Resource Center for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (ReCAPP) has
just launched a free interactive on-line course designed for health
educators and program administrators on the use of
Behavior-Determinant-Intervention (BDI) Logic Models. The BDI logic
model is an easy-to-use tool that establishes a clear and purposeful
road map for developing and evaluating health promotion/disease
prevention programs. The seven-lesson course can be completed at any
time. To enter the course, click on the icon on the right-hand side of
the screen on ReCAPP's homepage at www.etr.org/recapp

SARS OUTBREAK CONTAINED WORLDWIDE

The WHO has removed Taiwan and China from the list of areas with recent
local transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Taiwan
is the last area to be removed from the list. It has been 20 days, or
two consecutive 10-day incubation periods, since the last case on June
15. Based on country surveillance reports, the human chains of SARS
virus transmission appear to have been broken everywhere in the world.
However, due to the many questions remaining about SARS and the
possibility that cases may have slipped through the surveillance net,
WHO warns that continued global vigilance for SARS is crucial for the
foreseeable future. The world is not yet SARS-free. For the full
