SURREY, BC, A WINNER IN PAHO’S 2002 ACTIVE CITIES CONTEST

Cities in Argentina, Canada, Ecuador, and Peru have been named as
winners in the Active Cities Contest, which recognizes cities and
municipalities in the Americas for improving public spaces for
recreation and for promoting physical activity. Surrey, BC, beat out
competition in Canada and the United States for its exceptional work in
protecting its open areas for recreation and providing diverse programs
and activities to promote physical activity. Four other cities received
special recognition citations. For a full list of winners, visit:

DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION ARE CRUCIAL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Increasing access to drinking water is one of the priorities of the Pan
American Health Organization. Figures show that 70 million Latin
Americans lack access to drinking water. An alarm was raised after the
resurgence of cholera in 1991. PAHO's Basic Sanitation program supports
country efforts to provide infrastructure and services required by the
population to meet their basic environmental health needs. The program
seeks to reduce environmental risks associated with diarrheal diseases
by increasing access to water and sanitation services, improving
drinking water quality, and strengthening the institutions of the
sector. For further details, visit:

NURSES’ ROLE IN COLOMBIA STUDIED

A PAHO case study looks at the role that nurses have played in achieving
the objectives of the health system in Colombia. The study shows the
marked regional differences that underscore Colombia’s complex nature.
Though a single country, Columbia consists of several distinct regions,
making planning for development and health care a challenge. The report
is available online at:
