16th International Congress of Nutrition to be held in Montreal
July 27 - August 1st, 1997

The International Union of Nutritional Sciences will host the 16th
International Congress of Nutrition in Montreal, Canada July 27 to
August 1st, 1997.  "From Nutrition Science to Nutrition Practice for
Better Global Health" will be the theme of the event, which attracts
several thousand nutrition scientists, practitioners, and educators from
around the world every four years.

The goal of the program is to explore the cutting edge of research in
nutrition sciences and the relevance of this information in setting
nutrition policy, providing the consumer with quality food products, and
making recommendations for nutrition practices that will optimize health
through the prevention and treatment of disease.  Major themes will
include new methodologies in nutrition sciences from genetic engineering
to application of stable isotopic tracer techniques.  Topics related to
basic nutritional physiology and biochemistry will be explored in
relation to the needs of specific groups such as infants, women, elite
athletes, the aged, indigenous peoples and health issues in emerging
nations.  Current dietary prevention/treatment strategies in cancer,
AIDS, severe malnutrition, and atherosclerosis will be explored.

The 16th International Congress is being sponsored by the National
Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Society for Nutritional
Sciences, the Canadian Dietetic Association, Agricultural Institute of
Canada and the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology.

Employment Opportunities with the South Pacific Commission

Position: Medical Entomologist
Closing Date: July 31, 1996
Duty Station: Noumea, New Caledonia
Tenure: Three years in the first instance.

The successful applicant will be responsible to the team leader of the
Vector Borne Disease Control Programme. Applicants should have a higher
degree (preferable at the doctoral level) in entomology and a minimum
of three years working experience in a developing country or similar
environment. Experience in practical applied entomology would be useful.
Good written and spoken communications skills are essential. Good
administrative skills are highly desirable. Fluency in English and/or
French is required, and a good working knowledge of the other is an
advantage.

Position: Non-communicable Disease
Epidemiologist/Nutritionist
Closing Date: July 31, 1996
Duty Station: Noumea, New Caledonia
Tenure: Three years in the first instance.

As a mean of rationalisation and integration the South Pacific
Commission has decided to amalgamate the position of Nutritionist and
Non-Communicable Disease Epidemiologist.  The position will involve the
development of integrated programmes in community health nutrition with
the view of improving nutritional status of Pacific islanders and to
control and prevent non-communicable diseases in the region.

Qualifications and Experience: A higher degree (preferably at a doctoral
level) in public health nutrition and epidemiology is essential;
Applicants should also have a minimum of 3 years working experience in
a developing country or similar environment (candidates with experience
in the Pacific will be an advantage). Experience in the production,
management and use of food composition data would also be useful. Good
communication skills (written and spoken) are essential.  Good
administrative skills are highly desirable.  Fluency in English and/or
French is required, and a good working knowledge of the other an
advantage.

Position: Epidemiologist/Health Planner
Team leader - Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (VBDCP)

Duty Station: Noumea, New Caledonia
Tenure: Three years in the first instance.

The successful applicant will be responsible to provide advise and report
to the Manager Community Health Programmes in relation to the management
and implementation of the Vector Borne Disease Control Project.

Qualifications and Experience: A higher degree (preferably at doctoral
level) in public health and epidemiology is essential.  Applicants
should also have a minimum of 3 years working experience in a developing
country or similar environment (candidates with experience in the
Pacific will be an advantage).  Experience in management of large scale
programmes or projects will be an advantage.  Good communication skills
(written and spoken) are essential.  Good administrative skills are
highly desirable.  Fluency in English and/or French is required, and a
good working knowledge of the other an advantage.

Position: Non-Government Organisation Expert
Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (VBDCP)
Closing Date: August 31, 1996
Duty Station: Noumea, New Caledonia
Tenure: Three years in the first instance.

The successful applicant will work with the Commission’s Vector Borne
Disease Control Programme and will be expected to assist in the
mobilisation of communities in the project countries and to participate
in vector control activities and other activities related to the
project to prevent and control vector borne diseases.

Qualifications and Experience: Experience in working with grass roots
Pacific communities is required.  Good communication skills (written
and spoken) are essential.  Qualification in sociology, anthropology
and health education would be an advantage.  Good administrative skills
are highly desirable.  Must be prepared to visit/work with villages and
rural communities.  Fluency in English and/or French is required, and a
good working knowledge of the other an advantage.

responsible experience in positions in public health and /or
environmental health, workers’ health, water supply and sanitation, or

At international level: Two years of experience in providing technical
cooperation and/or participating in projects and activities in health
and the environment in developing countries of the Region.
Languages: Very good knowledge of Spanish with a working
knowledge of English.

Hardship/Mobility: US$5,277 at single rate, US$7,036 with primary
dependents (per annum net of taxes).

Education: An M.D. degree and a master’s degree in epidemiology or
public health with an emphasis in epidemiology or a Ph.D. degree in a
health related science with specialized postgraduate training in
epidemiology or public health.
Experience: At national level: Seven years of experience with managerial
responsibilities on epidemiological and disease prevention and control
programs. Experience should include the administration of health services
related to communicable diseases and the application of primary health
care strategy. Expertise in the control of tropical diseases such as
Chagas’ disease, dengue, and malaria would be an asset.
At international level: Two years of participation in technical
cooperation programs and activities in epidemiology, disease control,
and/or health services administration, involving more than one country.
Languages: Very good knowledge of Spanish with a working knowledge of
English.
