LATIN AMERICAN PROJECTS HONORED AT CONFERENCE ON GLOBALIZATION AND
EQUITY

Five Latin American projects won awards at the recent 4th Conference on
Globalization and Equity in Cairo, Egypt. The meeting, organized by the
Global Development Network, analyzed how the benefits of globalization
could be shared equitably and explored alternatives to reduce injustice
and inequity. For the first time, PAHO gave awards to research projects
and participated in the selection committee of the Award for the Most
Innovative Development Project, awarded this year to a Latin American
project called "Renascer" (Rebirth). The $100,000 award went to the
non-governmental organization working in poor neighborhoods of Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, which has helped some 5,000 poor children and 1,500
families recover from illness and improve their lives. For the full
article, visit: http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/pr030214.htm.

HEALTH AND POVERTY IN GUATEMALA

The Equidad listserver has recently highlighted the Worldbank document
"Health and Poverty in Guatemala." The authors state that the
"objective of this document is to provide up-to-date information on the
characteristics and patterns of the health status of the Guatemalan
population and recommend possible solutions to the institutional,
financing, and implementation problems that exist within the health
sector." The document is available in PDF format at:

PAHO AND THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MIGRATION TO WORK TOGETHER
ON HEALTH OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES

Under a new agreement signed last week, PAHO and the International
Organization for Migration (IOM) will work together to promote health
services for migrants and refugees in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The two organizations will collaborate to reduce death, disease and
disability among migrating populations, including cross-border migrants,
refugees and internally displaced persons, and persons who are victims
of trafficking. They have worked together previously during
post-conflict transition periods in Central America, in response to
Hurricane Mitch, and are assisting populations affected by the conflict
in Colombia. For more information, visit:

MAY 10th MOVE FOR HEALTH DAY: WHO LAUNCHES AN ANNUAL CELEBRATION!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that Move for Health
day will be celebrated annually as a global initiative to promote
physical activity as essential for health and well-being. The suggested
day for the celebration is May 10, but the timing will ultimately be
left to individual countries to decide. WHO Director General Dr Gro
Harlem Brundtland made the announcement at the first International
Conference for Sport and Development, in Magglingen, Switzerland, saying
that the initiative reflected Member State concerns that the increasing
chronic disease problems caused by unhealthy diet and physical
inactivity should not be addressed in isolation. There is a simple way
for all population groups to gain health, social and economic benefits
from physical activity according to WHO - at least 30 minutes
moderate-intensity physical activity daily.
