COMPENDIUM OF INTERNATIONAL HEALTH RESOURCES IN CANADA

During the 9th Canadian Conference on International Health, CSIH
launched its 2002 Compendium of International Health Resources in
Canada, including information on the 31 PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centres
in Canada. These Collaborating Centres are part of an
inter-institutional collaborative network of centres established to
provide technical cooperation by supporting the respective PAHO/WHO
Programs at the national, regional and global levels. The Compendium
also includes a listing of other international health resources such as
international health programs in Canadian universities, PAHO Publication
Centres, networks and forums, Canadian government agencies and
international organizations and other links of interest. The Compendium
is available online in PDF format at http://www.csih.org/paho/paho.html.

THE DENGUE BURDEN: ANALYZING ITS SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND EPIDEMIOLOGICAL
TRENDS

Dengue has become a major international public health problem. The
mosquito that transmits dengue is found in nearly 100 tropical
countries. Every year, there are between 50 and 100 million new
infections, with 250,000 to 500,000 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever,
which can be fatal. Considering the difficulties and the expenditures
faced by countries with national programs to fight the mosquito, a
vaccine against dengue is being seen as a potentially speedy solution to
control the global problem. For more information on PAHO's work with
dengue, visit: http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/100/100feature44.htm.

PRIMARY HEALTH CARE IN THE AMERICAS: CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK, EXPERIENCES,
CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES

The new PAHO report "Primary Health Care in the Americas: Conceptual
Framework, Experiences, Challenges and Perspectives" is intended to
contribute to the ongoing discussions on designing, implementing, and
evaluating new models of care in the context of health sector reform.
Based on an extensive review of published literature from around the
world, the document presents information on four key components of care:
provider, location of services, types of programs, and health concerns
or issues. The report is available in PDF format at:
http://www.paho.org/English/HSP/HSO/HSO07/primaryhealthcare.htm.

60 MILLION AFRICAN CHILDREN TO BE VACCINATED IN LAST PUSH TO ERADICATE
POLIO

The world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, Aventis Pasteur has donated 30
million doses of oral polio vaccine to the Global Polio Eradication
Initiative. The donation comes as 16 West African countries unite to
vaccinate all children under five within their borders against this
crippling disease. Recent immunization campaigns have dramatically
reduced the number of polio-endemic countries in Africa from 20 in 1999
to three to date this year. This success is due to the Global Polio
Eradication Initiative, a broad partnership forged to deliver polio
vaccine to every child under five. For the full press release, visit:
