WEB FORUM ON HIV/AIDS CARE, TREATMENT AND SUPPORT

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has asked the
Interagency Coalition on AIDS and development (ICAD) for assistance in
promoting discussion on a paper it had recently prepared entitled:
“Building Comprehensive Approaches To HIV/AIDS Care, Treatment & Support
In Resource Limited Settings.” This paper will inform the development of
guidelines being prepared for CIDA staff for use in the design,
assessment, monitoring and evaluation of programs and projects. The
guidelines are designed to facilitate the realization of international
commitments in the area of care, treatment and support for people living
with HIV/AIDS in settings with limited resources. ICAD will be hosting a
web forum to initiate a dialogue on the discussion paper and obtain
input from concerned individuals and organizations. Comments made on the
forum by Monday June 17 2002 will later be presented at an experts’
consultation to be held in Ottawa June 19-20. Those interested in
participating are asked to enter the forum at the following URL:
http://www.icad-cisd.com/forum/theforum.cfm?Forum=4&lang=e. For further
information, contact Michael O’Connor of ICAD at:

CIHI REPORT HIGHLIGHTS REGIONAL DIFFERENCES IN HEALTH CARE SERVICES AND
OUTCOMES OF CARE

There are significant regional differences in health and health services
across Canada, according to a new report released by the Canadian
Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Health Care in Canada 2002
showcases new and updated information on Canada's health care system and
focuses on three areas in detail with new information: outcomes of care
for specific diseases and procedures, public health programs and
results, and medication use and expenditures. For more information on
the report, visit:
http://secure.cihi.ca/cihiweb/hcic/media_29may2002_e.html.

IMPACT OF AN ANTI-TOBACCO CAMPAIGN ON DIRECT HEALTH CARE COSTS IN CANADA

The Canadian Council for Tobacco Control has submitted a report to the
Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada. The report, prepared
by Analysis Group/Economics, is available online: Impact of an
Anti-Tobacco Campaign on Direct Health Care Costs in Canada. Of
particular interest to the Commission, the study accounts for
tobacco-related direct health care costs such as hospitals, physicians
and research for the following tobacco and heart related illnesses: lung
cancer, cancer of the mouth, and cerebrovascular and chronic obstructive
pulmonary diseases. In the interest of providing very conservative cost
estimates, indirect costs such as productivity losses are not included.
The study's main conclusion is that there are over 65 million dollars in
direct health care cost savings for every percent decrease in smoking
prevalence in Canada.

NEW HEALTH CANADA TOBACCO AND YOUTH WEB SITE

The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Health, launched the new
Tobacco Youth web site entitled You and Me, Smokefree as part of Health
Canada's support for World No-Tobacco Day on May 31. This site is
designed to inform, educate and engage young Canadians on tobacco and
health issues. It builds on the four mutually reinforcing components of
the Federal Tobacco Control Strategy: prevention, protection, cessation
and harm reduction. Using the theme You and Me, Smokefree, the new
interactive online resource for youth, ages 12-17, features information
on topics such as the impact of second hand smoke, prevention, how to
get involved in tobacco control issues, cessation, quick facts on the
effects of tobacco use, as well as an interactive quiz. Interactive
components include "Cigarettes Inside Out" which lists toxic emissions
and a cost calculator which allows youth to see the benefits of
remaining or becoming smokefree. For the full press release, visit:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/english/media/releases/2002/2002_42.htm. You and
me, Smokefree can be found at:

AFGHANISTAN UPDATE FROM CIDA

Afghans from across the country are mobilizing to choose a new
government and write a new constitution. On June 10-16, a special
meeting of the Loya Jirga, or Grand Council of Afghanistan, will be
held. The Loya Jirga is a time-honoured Aghan tradition that brings
together local leaders from all ethnic groups to discuss matters of
common interest. The new administration they choose will build on the
work of the interim government appointed last December, and continue to
prepare the ground for peace and stability in Afghanistan. However, the
challenges remain: drought and landmines make growing essential food
supplies impossible in many areas, and tuberculosis, measles and
malnutrition continue to take a terrible toll.
