MARY PÉREZ DE MARRANZINI OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WINS THE 2002
CLARENCE MOORE AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE

The Pan American Health and Education Foundation presented this year's
Clarence H. Moore Award for voluntarism in health services to Mary Pérez
de Marranzini, for her outstanding work, leadership and dedication in
improving health care conditions for persons with physical and mental
disabilities in the Dominican Republic. The Award recognizes outstanding
contributions to health by national or local non-governmental or private
voluntary organizations or individuals in areas related to PAHO's
program of work. For more than 40 years, Mrs. Pérez de Marranzini has
led, managed and directed the Asociación Dominicana de Rehabilitación
(ADR), a non-profit institution. During all these years, Mrs. Pérez de
Marranzini and ADR have been working actively with health authorities in

THOUSANDS OF MATERNAL DEATHS IN THE AMERICAS ARE PREVENTABLE WITH GOOD
PRENATAL CARE

Maternal mortality due to complications in pregnancy, childbirth and
postpartum is still incredibly high and constitutes one of the greatest
inequities in the Americas, according to PAHO. In Canada, four mothers
die for every 100,000 live births; in contrast, 523 mothers in Haiti die
for every 100,000 live births. Within Latin America there are enormous
disparities: Chile has a maternal mortality rate of 23 per 100,000 live
births, while in Bolivia the rate is 390. Overall, almost 23,000 women
of childbearing age die every year from causes that, in many cases, are
preventable with basic prenatal care. For the full article, visit:

ABUSE OF THE ELDERLY

Abuse and neglect of the elderly has recently been addressed on the
EQUIDAD listserve. In "How Many of the Elderly Are Abused or
Neglected?," authors call for an expanded research effort. This article
is available online at:
http://www.infocusmagazine.org/2.2/hss_elder_abuse.html. In the book
Elder Mistreatment: Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation in an Aging
America, the authors write that though mistreatment of the elderly will
no doubt increase as the population ages, little is known about the
problem. The book is also available online at:
