WORLD HEALTH DAY 2003 CELEBRATED

On April 7, World Health Day, "Healthy Environments for Children" was
celebrated all over the world. In Ottawa, the Canadian Society for
International Health, on behalf of PAHO, collaborated with the Canadian
Institute on Child Health, Health Canada and Environment Canada in
holding a workshop on Children's Health and the Environment.
Eleven-year-old Ryan Hreljac, who founded the Ryan's Well Foundation to
supply village wells in Uganda, was the lunchtime speaker and received a
standing ovation. He has been raising funds for clean water projects in
the developing world since the age of six and has already received
Canada's Meritorious Service Medal and the Canadian Peace Award.

The World Health Organization called on Member States, the United
Nations system, nongovernmental organizations and all other people with
a stake in the future of children’s well-being to take more effective,
more visible and more concerted action to reduce the toll of
environmental hazards on children’s lives. For the full press release,
visit: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/releases/2003/pr28/en/

UNICEF published a press release titled "Protecting children is key to
their health." "A well-nourished child who is beaten at home is not a
healthy child," said Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of UNICEF. "A
child who is sexually abused at school is not a healthy child. An
immunized child who is forced into hazardous child labour is not a
healthy child. Such abuse and exploitation has huge implications for the
long-term health and development of millions of children." For the full
press release, visit:

GLOBAL CANCER RATES COULD INCREASE BY 50% TO 15 MILLION BY 2020

According to the recently released World Cancer Report, global cancer
rates could further increase by 50% to 15 million new cases in the year
2020. The World Cancer Report is issued by the International Agency for
Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization. The Report
also provides clear evidence that healthy lifestyles and public health
action by governments and health practitioners could stem this trend and
prevent as many as one third of cancers worldwide. For the full press
release, visit: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/releases/2003/pr27/en/
