CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL HEALTH: ABSTRACTS DUE IN 6 DAYS!

The deadline for submitting abstracts for the 9th Annual Canadian
Conference on International Health is May 15th!  The conference will be
held in Ottawa, October 27-30th, and is organized and hosted each year
by the Canadian Society for International Health.  This year the theme
is “Poverty, Health & Equity: From Global Challenges to Innovative

DEMOCRACY AND HEALTH: FROM IDEA TO REALITY

The gap between rich and poor in Latin America and the Caribbean is
starkly evident through differences in access to health services and,
consequently, in health and living standards of the low-income
population. This has the effect of weakening basic democratic
principles, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Today PAHO is supporting democratization of health systems, a task
linked to the struggle for equity that transcends the written word,
legislation and speeches. "For health services to get to the people who
most need them," says Dr. Cesar Vieira, coordinator of the program on
public policy and health at PAHO, "it is not enough to have some
legislation or to have a given service that in principle is supposedly
accessible to all for free.”

CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR NGO WORK

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is now inviting proposals
from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for projects that will
advocate for policies to curb the tobacco epidemic and that support the
implementation of a strong Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

PAHO/WHO 2002 MANUEL VELASCO-SUAREZ BIOETHICS AWARD

The Pan American Health and Education Foundation is seeking nominations
for the 2002 Manuel Velasco-Suarez Bioethics Award.  The award is
intended to stimulate young scholars in developing bioethical analysis
and carries a cash prize of US$10,000.  PAHO/WHO named the award in
honor of Manuel Velasco-Suarez, Mexican physician, researcher, scholar
and founder of the Instituto Nacional de Neurología and of the Mexican
National Bioethics Commission.  For more Award information, visit:

PAHO 2002 ABRAHAM HORWITZ AWARD FOR INTER-AMERICAN HEALTH

To recognize individuals whose public health achievements have resulted
in major improvements to the lives of the peoples of the Americas, the
Pan American Health and Education Foundation established the Abraham
Horwitz Award for Leadership in Inter-American Health in 1975. This
award honors extraordinary contributions to community health with an
emphasis on work of truly regional significance.  PAHO is currently
seeking nominations for the award.  The deadline is May 30, 2002.  For

HEALTH MINISTERS SIGN SUCRE AGREEMENT

On April 23, 2002, the ministers of health for the Andean Region and
Chile signed an agreement in the city of Sucre, Bolivia, aimed at
preventing the spread of the measles outbreak currently affecting
Venezuela. The Sucre Agreement calls for countries in the region to:
adequately finance national immunization programs; carry out vaccination
campaigns on a timely basis; coordinate the simultaneous implementation
of national immunization weeks, beginning in 2003; and maintain active
epidemiological surveillance at all levels, using active case-finding as
a routine strategy in high risk areas.

NEW WHO REPORT: GENETIC RESEARCH COULD SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES IN
DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Genetic research could lead to major medical advances in coming years
against fatal diseases, including those that seriously affect the
developing world, says a new WHO report. “Genomics and World Health”
details the latest advances in genome research, discusses related
ethical aspects and calls for a fund for research and development. The
developing world needs to share in the fruits of this cutting edge
research; the report recommends how it can do so.  For more information,

PAHO JOB OPPORTUNITY: EPIDEMIOLOGIST FOR PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI

PAHO is seeking an epidemiologist to work in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  The
successful candidate will provide the country with technical cooperation
related to the uses of epidemiological principles and methods as applied
to the areas of disease control, planning of health services, and
evaluation of the health situation.  The application deadline is June
