9TH CANADIAN CONFERENCE FOR INTERNATIONAL HEALTH (CCIH): THREE STREAMS
TO BE OFFERED!

In addition to keynote themes, this year's Canadian Conference on
International Health will offer three streams running all three days of
the conference! The Capacity-Building stream will feature workshops and
symposia aimed at knowledge and skills transfer. For example, there
will be workshops on participatory evaluation techniques and how to
build effective partnerships. The Knowledge Development stream will
include a variety of papers and presentations on topics such as research
with developing countries, using appropriate and innovative
methodologies; and evidence-based decision-making. The Action stream
will feature papers, presentations and workshops on innovative programs,
projects and policy-related activities with disadvantaged groups in the
developed and developing world. All sessions will provide an
opportunity for audience participation. For more information on this
year's CCIH, "Poverty, Health & Equity: From Global Challenges to
Innovative Solutions," visit the conference website:

MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES CANADA: G8 -- 100% TALK, 5% FINANCE

G8 leaders must move from rhetoric to action to ensure access to
effective and affordable treatments for infectious diseases in the
developing world, says Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international
medical relief organization. MSF argues that hot air will not fund
ambitious plans to address the access to medicines crisis. Now is the
time to transform political commitment into hard cash. Access to
essential medicines remains a critical global health issue, with 1/3 of
the world's people, and up to 1/2 of the population in parts of Africa,
lacking access to essential medicines. Access to existing
antiretrovirals (ARVs) for example, remains a dream for the vast
majority of people living with HIV outside of G8 and other Western
countries. After 20 years, the AIDS epidemic continues to gain momentum:
20 million are dead, 40 million people live with HIV worldwide, and only
a fraction has access to treatment. To read the full article, visit MSF
Canada's website: http://www.msf.ca/.

AIDS 2002 SATELLITE SESSION ON JULY 7

The Atlantic Centre of Excellence for Women's Health (ACEWH) in Halifax,
Nova Scotia, and their partners are inviting interested parties to be a
part of a satellite session on gender-based health policy and HIV/AIDS.
The session is entitled: "Gender and HIV/AIDS: Bringing Women and Men
Together." Discussions from this interactive session will help to inform
the design of curriculum modules for a proposed International Institute
on Gender Mainstreaming and HIV/AIDS. The proposed institute will serve
to increase the capacity of program managers and policy makers to
incorporate gender-based perspectives into their HIV/AIDS work.

To register for the satellite session, please send an email to
[log in to unmask] There is a 200-person capacity. For additional
information about ACEWH, visit: http://www.medicine.dal.ca/acewh.

UN REPORT: AWARENESS OF AIDS HIGH, BUT RISKY BEHAVIOUR REMAINS

Despite a greater awareness of HIV/AIDS, especially in developing
countries, individuals continue to engage in risky behaviour. According
to a new United Nations report, dramatic changes in sexual and
reproductive behaviour are needed in order to defeat the epidemic.

WORLD POPULATION DAY IS JULY 11!

Reproductive health is central to a woman's life opportunities and
choices. More than 350 million women do not have access to a choice of
safe and affordable contraceptive methods. Reproductive health saves
lives: some 500,000 women die each year from mostly preventable causes
related to pregnancy and perhaps 15 times as many suffer injury or
infection. The theme for this year's World Population Day is "Action
against poverty: empower, protect, educate." For more information,

WOMEN AND HEALTHY AGING

As women age, their health concerns evolve. Much public attention on
older women is focused now on menopause, heart disease and osteoporosis,
with new research appearing almost daily. Debates rage over drug
therapies such as hormones, tamoxifen and biphosphonates.
Meanwhile, multitudes of commercial interests are vying for a market
share, promising the fountain of youth. Drug and medical equipment
companies claim to prevent osteoporosis, heart disease, breast cancer,
and the "symptoms" of menopause. Anti-wrinkle creams and bone building
supplements crowd the store shelves. Plastic surgeons promote injections
that paralyze women's facial muscles. The Canadian Women's Health
Network looks at the facts of aging and offers a list of resources at
their website: http://www.cwhn.ca/indexeng.html.
