Plea for Help from Cuba's Instituto Superior de Ciencias Medicas
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Agustin Vicedo, Chief Professor of Biochemistry of the
Instituto Superior de Ciencias Medicas in Havana, Cuba has issued
a plea for assistance to the Society and its members. The
Institute's ability to provide quality teaching is severely
hampered by lack of supplies such as paper, pens, and textbooks.
The Institute would be extremely grateful for the donation of
plain 8.5 x 11 inch paper (they need at least 25,000 sheets), as
well as of basic biomedical sciences or biochemistry textbooks.
Should you or your organization be in a position to help, please
contact either Marc Hyndman at [log in to unmask] or Dr. Agustin
Vicedo himself at:
Instituto Superior de Ciencias Medicas, Avenida 31 y calle 146,
Cubanacan, Playa, La Habana, Cuba.

Philippines to get up to US$1.5 Billion from ADB in Next 3 Years
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This may be a good year for Canadian consultants and suppliers to
enter the Philippine market via ADB financed projects. In the
past four years, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has lent the
Philippines an average of US$278 million annually to finance
crucial development projects. In 1995-1997 the ADB's lending level
to the Philippines is expected to increase to US$400-500 million
annually.

Projects to improve social infrastructure will continue to receive
a big slice of the Bank's loans to the Philippines. Health,
education and water supply projects worth around US$430 million
have been identified for completion over the next 3 years. Health
projects will focus on the devolution of health services from
national to local government units.

International Health Economics Association Inaugural Conference
----------------------------------------------------------------
Quality and Inequality: What Care, Whose Costs, Whither Health?

May 19-23, 1996
Hyatt Regency Hotel
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Health economics is becoming an increasingly prominent `discipline'
in the evolution of health care systems around the world. This
rapidly expanding interest in the work and results of health
economics research has given rise to a need for new and better ways
to communicate, both within the health economics community, and
from that community to those responsible for crafting and adjusting
health and health care policy.

The conference is structured to be truly international, not only in
the themes it addresses, but in the audience which it hopes to
reach. One of the key objectives of the conference organizers is
to create opportunities for the exchange of ideas and experiences
among members of the health economics community form nations around
the world.
