CELEBRATING PAHO'S CENTENNIAL

The Pan American Health Organization celebrated its 100th anniversary on
December 2, 2002, with a hemisphere-wide series of activities, from
symposiums to commemorative acts to postage stamps. Activities were held
in PAHO's 35 member countries in the Americas. They ranged from 100
balloons being released in El Salvador before a national event honoring
health heroes to a special series of commemorative stamps issued in
Trinidad and Tobago honoring 100 years of PAHO, to a national lottery
and postage stamp issue in Mexico honoring PAHO. In Canada, PAHO's
centennial was marked by a birthday party and dinner honoring Canada's
PAHO Health Heroes during the Canadian Conference on International
Health in late October (see the press release at:
http://www.csih.org/paho/paho.html) and by a tree-planting at Health
Canada's Ottawa campus in July. For more information on the
celebrations, visit: http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/pr021202.htm.

UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL KOFI ANNAN PAYS TRIBUTE TO A CENTURY OF
EFFORT BY THE PAN AMERICAN HEALTH ORGANIZATION

Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary-General, paid tribute to PAHO on
its 100th anniversary on December 2, calling its contributions over the
past century a “unifying, democratizing force” that has brought hope to
many people. In his address at PAHO's Centennial Dinner in Washington,
D.C., the Secretary-General said the organization's record is one to be
proud of, one which has helped increase life expectancy in the Americas
to 72 years, up from 50 years a century ago. For the full press release,

PAHO ADVOCACY KIT ON GENDER AND HIV/AIDS

PAHO's Women, Health and Development Program has launched its new Gender
and HIV/AIDS Advocacy kit following World AIDS Day on December 1. The
kit consists of two fact sheets, an issue paper and a PowerPoint
presentation that look at the gendered aspects of the HIV pandemic in
the Americas. The kit is available at:

HEALTH AND HEMISPHERIC SECURITY

In the new paper "Health and Hemispheric Security," PAHO stresses the
importance of human security for national and hemispheric security and
itemizes the role and place of health in the preservation of such
security. The paper emphasizes that a regional plan of action must
include advocacy, improvement of information and surveillance systems,
support for regional institutions (given the transnational nature of
some health risks), and properly focused research and training. The
document is available in PDF format at:
http://www.paho.org/English/HDP/hdr-up-Nov.pdf.

KELLOGG SCHOLARS IN HEALTH DISPARITIES PROGRAM

The US Center for the Advancement of Health has been awarded a $2.5
million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to continue and expand
its successful Scholars in Health Disparities program through 2005. The
program is designed to train minority scholars conducting research on
understanding health disparities by race, ethnicity, gender and
socioeconomic status, the mechanisms that influence health outcomes and
interventions and policy alternatives that can be developed to reduce
those disparities. The new grant will enable 20 new minority
postdoctoral fellows (US citizens or residents) to conduct research at
Harvard University, the University of Michigan, Morgan State University
and the University of California, San Francisco. For application
information, visit: http://www.cfah.org/programs/03letter.pdf.
