Cultural Assessments provide a mechanism for presenting structured, expert consideration of race and cultural experience into evidence to courts before sentencing African Canadians. Robert Wright has conducted several Cultural Assessments including one commissioned in the landmark youth matter cited as: R. v. “X”, 2014 NSPC 95<http://www.canlii.org/en/ns/nspc/doc/2014/2014nspc95/2014nspc95.pdf>.
In this lecture and speaking tour Robert will share his experience in conducting the Cultural Assessment in the R. v. “X”. case. He will discuss the intersection of race, justice and mental health seen in the case and the important contribution that the Cultural Assessment made.
