Personally, my view would be that that if anyone can put anything they want on the
listserve.   Even 'infomercials" serve to provide a status report on the state of
things. Who is to decide what is relevant and what isn't? (our coordinators,
apparently) .  One could make the case that when an academic like me puts an
opinion or latest study on something onto the listserve, that is basically an
infomercial for that person and for the program, the University, and the department
he or she is a member of.
