See below for a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the development of a manual
on supporting healthy child development in Aboriginal families in Ontario.

The development of this project will be led and guided by Aboriginal
individuals. We hope that a strong and credible Aboriginal group/individual
will take on this project. We also plan to involve an advisory group made up
of representatives from key Aboriginal organisations. The resource will
complement existing resources on this topic.

RFP:
Supporting Healthy Child Development in Aboriginal Families,
Best Start Resource Centre

Deadline for Proposals: August 12, 2005

The Best Start Resource Centre is seeking a researcher/writer to research
and write a report about supporting healthy child development in Aboriginal
families.

Purpose: This report will be developed for a range of service providers who
work with Aboriginal families. The report will provide relevant research and
practical strategies in supporting healthy child development in Aboriginal
families. It will be developed and written in a manner that is
strength-based and respectful of cultural values and beliefs. This project
will be guided by an advisory group of experts and key stakeholders in
Aboriginal health. The report will be produced in English and will be
approximately 30,000 words in length.

The report will be completed by December, 2005. It will be promoted through
listservs and e-bulletins. It will be available in print format, as well as
through the Best Start website.

Preliminary content areas:
·	Summary of current information on the health status of Aboriginal children
aged 0-6 in Ontario
·	Underlying factors for health of Ontario Aboriginal children aged 0-6
·	Effective strategies/approaches for supporting healthy child development
of Aboriginal children aged 0-6, including information from the literature,
focus groups and key informant interviews
·	Other sources of information

Audience: Service providers who work with Aboriginal families, and have a
role in supporting healthy child development in children aged 0-6. Some
examples include staff in public health, Friendship Centres, Early Years
programs, CAPC/CPNP programs, early childhood education, infant development
programs, etc.

Methodology:
Focusing on Aboriginal children aged 0-6, the successful applicant will:
·	Work with Best Start and the Advisory group to further define the
methodology and the content for the report
·	Complete a review of relevant literature related to health status and
effective strategies in supporting healthy child development in Aboriginal
families
·	Set up and complete a minimum of 3 focus groups with Aboriginal family
members to ask about services that were helpful and not helpful, in
supporting healthy child development
·	Set up and complete a minimum of 20 key informant interviews, concerning
effective practices and approaches in supporting healthy child development
in Aboriginal families
·	Synthesize evidence from the literature, focus groups and key informant
interviews, focusing mainly on underlying factors, health status and
effective strategies for supporting healthy child development in Aboriginal
families
·	Draft a report, and finalize the text based on input from Best Start and
the Advisory group
·	Authorship is still to be determined
·	Best Start has $15,000 available for this contract.

The successful applicant will demonstrate strong research and writing
skills. Applicant will have demonstrated experience, sensitivity and skills
in developing resources related to Aboriginal health and child development.

Interested groups/individuals are requested to submit a brief proposal. The
proposal should demonstrate the applicant's knowledge, skills and experience
to successfully fulfill this contract; identify approach that the applicant
will take in researching and drafting the report; and fee. All proposals
will be held in confidence.

Completion date: mid-December, 2005
