* * *NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FROM THE CTCRI AND ITS PARTNERS

The CTCRI is pleased to announce the next round of its Knowledge Synthesis
grant program.

One time grants of up to $80,000 will be offered for research that supports
original reviews and identification of "better practices" to prevent, treat,
or otherwise control tobacco abuse and nicotine addiction.

The deadline for Letters of Intent (LOI) is October 1, 2004. Successful
Applicants will be invited to present full proposals by April, 2005.

The CTCRI has extended its Workshop and Learning Opportunity Grant program
with the new objective of building capacity for tobacco-related research in
a region or population; providing unique opportunities to bring together
individuals from different disciplines and/or sectors and supporting the
sharing of knowledge, the initiation of collaborations and planning of
relevant research activities.

A one-time grant of $15,000 is available for eligible workshops and learning
events. There is no deadline, but proposals must be submitted 3 months prior
to the event.

grants competitions!
Policy Research Grants

One time support of up to $80,000 is available for policy research conducted
within a two-year period. Proposals that meet the following objectives will
be considered:
        -       To foster excellent, timely research that will influence and
guide policy decisions in tobacco control.
        -       To increase the involvement of policy decision-makers at all
levels in the research process.

A fast-track process is also available for proposals that are of an
especially timely nature.

Idea Grants

Grants of up to $50,000 for one year period are available to support the
testing of research methods, tools or hypotheses, or the exploration of
novel ideas which fall outside the normal scope of traditional research
either in topic or in methodology and might therefore be regarded as
speculative or risky.

October 1, 2004 is also a deadline for submissions of the full proposal for
Knowledge Synthesis Grants for those whose Letters of Intent were successful
in the April 1, 2004 competition.
