The following Letter to the Editor in the Toronto Globe and Mail shows how
the public's understanding has been shaped by Globe and Mail reporting of
health issues. Note the complex analysis of the social class and obesity
issue. But then, this is the same analysis the Globe and Mail -- Canada's
Newspaper of Record -- gives to its readers on a daily basis.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

By ADAM SCOTT
Ottawa -- I just don't buy Michael Polanyi's argument (letter -- Feb. 13)
that poverty is a cause of obesity because poor people can't afford healthy
food.

After graduating, when I was at my poorest, my diet was based on rice,
beans, broccoli, sweet potatoes, canned tomatoes and oatmeal. All healthy,
all dirt cheep. I was putting together a week's worth of meals for under
$15 and I was in the best shape of my life.

The other secret to my svelte form was not buying a car; this remains the
best fitness and financial plan I've ever committed to.

Rich or poor, people get fat for the same reasons -- bad food choices and
not enough exercise.
