Invites you to its Ontario Regional Conference

 “Great Expectations” and Competing Accountabilities:
Challenges for Community Agencies

Toronto, Friday, March 3, 2006

This conference will analyze the funding structures that are in place to
support the work of community agencies. To what extent are these
structures effective? To what extent do they limit the quality of programs
and services offered by agencies?

The conference is intended to bring together community agency staff,
funders, policy makers, academics and activists who wish to explore issues
of funding in relation to community agencies.

By bringing together these groups, we hope the conference will illuminate
the challenges that community agencies face in dealing with competing
accountabilities, and the ways in which some community agencies and
funders have addressed these challenges.

During this conference the following questions will be addressed:

How have accountability measures affected the work done by community
agencies?

Who is accountable to whom, for what and why? What does the web of
accountability look like?

How should service providers deal with pressures from different and
sometimes competing constituencies like clients, funders, public at large
and government?

How can the role of agencies be reinforced as sites for participatory
democracy, to help create an engaged citizenry?
