Subject: [POHG] Left orthodoxy and the politics of health

Dennis' citation of Jeannette Mitchell's book What Is To De Done About Illness and Health? encouraged me to look again at another PoHG publication, Mick Carpenter's 1980 article 'Left orthodoxy and the politics of health' (attached) published in Capital and Class. It is a long read but I can't praise it too highly. 43 years after its publication, it could almost have been written yesterday. It's a beautifully, straightforwardly written comprehensive account of the political economy of health and of the need for transformation of the social relations of health care in the UK. It should be essential reading for every health/medical practitioner, health student and health advocate. Even for those unfamiliar with the language of political economy it is accessible enough for its extremely important messages to be absolutely clear

Alex
