RELEASE OF HPRP POLICY RESEARCH REPORTS
Brief Description:
Measuring Community Capacity
_________________________________________________________________
The Applied Research and Analysis Directorate is pleased to announce the
release of the final report of the Health Policy Research Program project
entitled: Measuring Community Capacity: State of the Field Review and
Recommendations for Future Research. The research was carried out at the
David Thompson Health Region (Alberta), and the Principal Investigator for
this project was Neale Smith.
Health promotion practitioners and academics have noted that effective
action requires direct community engagement and the sharing of meaningful
decision making power. Measuring community capacity permits the assessment
of the capacity of the community to act on health determinants and the
overall health status of the community. The synthesis study identified
eleven key themes and four main gaps in the literature. Three
recommendations for further research and funding were proposed -
interdisciplinary research partnerships to develop further methods for
measuring community capacity; interdisciplinary research partnerships to
apply the tools developed in the first recommendation and evaluate
increased community capacity as an outcome of community health development
initiatives; and a research project targeting effective mechanisms for
knowledge transfer in measuring community capacity.
This research resulted from a successful proposal in July 2001 in response
to RFP# 003, Synthesis Research. The RFP sought proposals dealing with the
synthesis of existing research concerning community capacity.
