one option might be to compile a weekly report.  I have a number of lists
that do this.  The e-mail report arrives regularly every Thursday night, or
Monday morning etc.  The topics are numbered as a list at the top by subject
headings, then it is easy to scroll down to find any particular item of
interest.  I find this much easier to manage than to have many posted
comments arrive each day.

If people are interested to discuss a particular topic, they could initiate
a bulletin board on the website, which they then undertake to monitor and
close off at an appropriate time.
