Subject: Divine Spark

Hal,

The fragment we have, titled by Mark Twain "The Divine Spark," was perhaps
originally 9 pages long, but only pages 1-2, and 8-9 are known to survive.
Three pages numbered A, B, and C used to be housed with these four and were
thought to be part of the same work. But in July 1982 John Tuckey recognized
them as part of the first version of "The Turning Point of My Life," and
they are now housed with that MS. That first version, however, was published
by Paul Baender in *What Is Man?* (1973), pp. 521-29. The MS pages labeled
A, B, and C were not available to Baender, who relied instead on a
typescript of them. The text of these three pages appears in his edition on
pp. 526-27 ("Temperament is the source" through "made him a better dog.")

So up until 1982 when Tuckey made this change, "The Divine Spark" was
thought to include that text, and in that sense may be thought of as
published. But so far as we can tell, "The Divine Spark" did not originally
contain them, and is now truly fragmentary, consisting entirely of pages 1-2
and 8-9.

Hope this is some help.

Bob
