As I recall, Carnegie donated money to help MT pay off his debts when he
was in bankruptcy, and at times he sent MT good whiskey from Scotland.
Both of them also belonged to the Anti-Imperialist League. You might
consult Mark Twain's Letters for correspondence with Carnegie. Philip
Foner's book, Mark Twain, Social Critic, contains a discussion of MT and
the Anti-Imperialist League. On the League, you might also check C.
Roland Marchand, The American Peace Movement and Social Reform,
1898-1918; and Robert L. Beisner, Twelve Against Empire: The
Anti-Imperialists, 1898-1900.
