The title page states "Forty to Fifty Years Ago". The University
of California 1985 paperback edition of _Huck Finn_ elaborates in its
endnote on p. 372: "sometime between about 1835 and 1845". Twain had
changed the date from "forty years ago" in 1884 to agree with the sequel
_H. F. and Tom Sawyer among the Indians_.
