For the benefit of satisfying John's curiosity, I've not found
a definitive answer to the translation question. MacKinnon
Simpson's definition of a fanatic quote is most interesting,
but remains unverified. Would be ironic if the Tom Sawyer
passage translated into German and back again into English
has somehow yielded the definition of a fanatic.
