Hmmm... "met" should probably read "first exchanged letters with"

They exchanged letters when Paine was writing his Nast bio. But they also 
met at a dinner about that same time, and I don't recall which came first--  
but I think the dinner, while Nast was still alive, before Paine had begun 
his work on the bio.
