I can confirm the source. The translation is not too good - like all
German translations of "Tom Sawyer" so far. Withough giving much thought
to it, "to bend over double" is usually translated by "mit verdoppelter
Anstrengung" - this might solve the puzzle (and explain the
misunderstanding).
