Hi, Greg. I am in the middle of editing a long paper on Mark Twain's
writings about American Indians, which does relate to the time in which
he was writing. But I would hesitate to impose the darned thing on anyone
at this point. However, if you want to take a look at a decent "New
Historicist" work on Twain, try Susan Gillman's _Dark Twins: Imposture
and Identity in Mark Twain's America_ (U. of Chicago P., 1989). Hope this
