On July 4, known as Philippine-American Friendship Day in the
Philippines because the U.S. granted the country independece
on July 4, 1946, _The Philippine Star_ ran an editorial quoting Mark
Twain's "To the Person Sitting in Darkness."  It concludes:

"I cannot think of a better way of celebrating Fil-American
Friendship Day than by permanently honoring Mark Twain with a fitting
monument that could serve as the focal point of every annual
Fil-American Friendship Day commemoration."
