Only man is capable of the meanness and pettiness which Twain observed and which may even be observed occasionally on the Mark Twain Forum.  

Yes, it's not hard for me to believe that the man who could write so disparagingly of being alive (and human) might prefer to be an animal.  The big disadvantage of being an animal would be that one might still have to deal with the cruelty of humans.
