The Mark Twain Conference in Hannibal is an excellent conference, not only for the fine papers, and not only for the fine company (and it is very fine), but also for the experiences that you can’t get anywhere else. I had never been to Hannibal until I went to the first conference, eight years ago. Henry Sweets puts together an itinerary that includes the visits he mentions below. The Quarles farm site was very interesting eight years ago, and I am eager to see what new archaeology and restoration they have done at the site. I always enjoy the concluding dinner and ride on the riverboat. But the real revelation for me was the Mark Twain Cave. It was not at all what I had imagined, and being inside forever changed the way I read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. If you have never been to Hannibal, this conference offers you the best experience you could have. And if you have been before, you will find new things on your return. I look forward to seeing many of you there in July!
