Here's Good News!

_Mark Twain's Library: A Reconstruction_
_Mark Twain: A Reference Guide_

Twenty years out of print, Alan Gribben's authoritative _Mark
Twain's Library: A Reconstruction_ (G.K. Hall, 1980) and Thomas
Tenney's _Mark Twain: A Reference Guide_ (G.K. Hall. 1977) are
widely used, much in demand, but not available at any price.

We are now trying to see if it would be practical to reprint one or
both of these essential works, under the imprint of the _Mark Twain
Journal_. This is a daunting project to undertake on a shoestring,
but well worth while if there is sufficient interest before the
investment in a new printing.

Plans call for re-setting of type and some correction of errors,
with a low-acid paper and sturdy library bindings comparable to the
original G.K. Hall editions. Reduction of white space in the
_Reference Guide_ would permit slightly larger type and fewer
pages, to improve readability and keep the price down.

_Mark Twain's Library_ was priced at $75.00 in 1980, and _Mark
Twain: A Reference Guide_ first was priced at $45.00 (later
increased) in 1977. Staying well behind inflation, we are
considering prices of $125.00 and $100.00, respectively.

Plans call next for publishing substantial supplements if sales of
these books break even on their costs. Alan Gribben has published
a number of journal articles on Mark Twain's reading since _Mark
Twain's Library_ appeared in 1980, and Thomas Tenney's supplements
to his 1977 _Reference Guide_ (for some years in _American Literary
Realism_ and later in the _Mark Twain Circular_ and _Mark Twain
Journal_) are sufficient for a second volume larger than the first.

These are major reference works, needed by libraries that failed to
order them when they first appeared and libraries whose copies have
since vanished (it's a wicked world). They are a pleasure for those
who love Mark Twain to read, and essential for the serious scholar.
We want very much to bring them back into print, and ask for your
support. Please let me know if you would like consider ordering
either or both books and perhaps their supplements, for yourself or
for your library. This would not be a binding commitment, but it
would be helpful to have your name, institution, and any words of
encouragement. And if there's sufficient evidence this project can
succeed, we'll go ahead. Please respond to me directly by e-mail,
