In my essay about *Pudd'nhead Wilson* in *Critical Companion to Mark Twain*,
ed. Kent Rasmussen, I briefly consider this comparison of Dawson's Landing
to Venice as a comment on the Southern aristocracy of the town (pp.
402-403).
