In preparing to write a bit about Whanganui for my Geography of Twain
site, I looked into my copy of Robert Cooper's "Around the World with
Mark Twain".  He got the story right (pg 164-5), despite Twain's
obviously heartfelt remarks on patriotism, he was in error on the
nature of the monument.  So much so that he re-imagined two monuments.
To compound the error, the European settlers were in error regarding
the motivation for the combatants in this battle.
