John--=0A=
=0A=
Thanks for the call. I don't think I'll be attending ALA for the first tim=
e in a long time (and I'll miss it); I'll be in Denmark through July anyway=
, maybe a little longer. =0A=
=0A=
I think the Mark Twain players is a great idea. We've got a number of pers=
onalities among our community who could be great. =0A=
=0A=
Keep me posted about anything that I can assist with as a member of the Exe=
c. Comm. =0A=

=0A=
The deadline for ALA in Boston, May 21-25, is fast approaching, January =3D=
=0A=
15. Please send to me if you have a proposal for the first session or =3D=
=0A=
want to be a part of the second.=0A=

Mark Twain and Disability=0A=
Mark Twain=3DE2=3D80=3D99s works are filled with characters who are challen=
ged =3D=0A=
by disability, a theme he explored throughout his career. His constant =3D=
=0A=
focus on the body yields a rich and interesting set of themes and ideas. =
=3D=0A=
This session calls for papers that use the emerging field of disability =3D=
=0A=
studies to examine Twain=3DE2=3D80=3D99s work. Preference will be given to =
=3D=0A=
works that have a relatively narrow focus rather than broad overviews. =3D=
=0A=
Papers should have some theoretical connection to disability studies, =3D=
=0A=
although Twain should be the main focus. Send 250-500 word abstracts by =3D=
=0A=
January 15, 2015 to John Bird, [log in to unmask]

and Reconsidered=0A=
Rather than a session of papers, this session will involve a =3D=0A=
re-enactment of Twain=3DE2=3D80=3D99s notorious Whittier Birthday Speech, =
=3D=0A=
delivered at Boston=3DE2=3D80=3D99s Hotel Brunswick in 1877, with a reading=
 of =3D=0A=
the speech, readings of newspaper accounts, readings from letters =3D=0A=
between William Dean Howells and Twain, and readings of reminiscences by =
=3D=0A=
both Howells and Twain. A discussion will follow. Persons who plan to =3D=
=0A=
attend the conference and are willing to read parts (and thus join the =3D=
=0A=
company of The Mark Twain Players) should contact John Bird by January =3D=
=0A=
15, 2015. Scripts will be distributed in advance of the conference. Send =
